LGV Driver Apprenticeship Course Overview

The LGV Driver Apprenticeship is aimed for Logistics, Freight Forwarding and Haulage companies with Supply Chain goods vehicle drivers. The LGV Driver Apprenticeship is coming soon to Modal Training, across 12 months you will learn road safety, procedures and legislation, vehicle safety, route planning, health and safety and you will be able to practice in our new LGV simulator.

LGV Apprenticeships are a great way for the industry to develop their workforce for the future, capitalising upon the latest knowledge and skills. Supply Chain Specialist Large Goods Vehicle Drivers are legally required to obtain their Category C licence during the Apprenticeship in order to drive large goods vehicles.

LGV Driver Apprenticeship Course Content

Below is a draft programme of learning to meet the standards for a LGV Driver Apprenticeship .

Company introduction, job role and objectives
This will be learnt across 1.5 weeks

Company job shadowing – building company knowledge

Modules 1 and 2 training
Test taken in month 2

Modules 4 practical demonstration training and test

7 Days Category C driver training and test
5 hours per day

7 Days Category C+E upgrade driver training and test
Test taken in month 12

Job specific training / coaching and discussions – off the job by client and with a trainer assessor
1 day per month

Driver compliance and safety regulations

Health and Safety for LGV drivers

Daily walk round checks and defects reporting and basic vehicle maintenance

Customer Service
This will include simulator time

Urban driving
This will include simulator time

Motorway driving
This will include simulator time

Winter driving
This will include simulator time

Rural driving
This will include simulator time

SAFED
Theory and practical work including in-cab work and simulator time

Safe loading and unloading

Driver hours and Road Transport Working Time Regulations

Analogue and digital tachographs and tachograph recording

First Aid at Work

Vulnerable road users
This will include simulator time

Depot safety

Reversing and manovering

Theft prevention and security on the road

Route planning
Including practical planning sessions and hazards e.g low bridges

Supporting emergency situations

ALLMI lorry cranes
This will include mobile cranes and tail lifts

Returned goods

Technology and Logistics
This includes hand held scanners, on board telematics, on board/external cameras and GPS and sat nav

Course Benefits

Throughout the LGV Driver Apprenticeship many of the modules will consist of simulator time on our new LGV. This will provide learners with the opportunity to learn in an environment as close to reality as possible, our simulator allows us to cater for all individuals to improve learner development. The LGV simulator can be tailored to meet individual needs through manipulating elements such as scenarios, weather conditions and locations, allowing apprentices to learn without getting behind the wheel of an LGV truck.
