First cohort of cadets start at Humber Maritime College
Humber Maritime College (HMC) welcomed its first group of Merchant Navy cadets this week. The cadets, many of whom are local but have also come from further afield, started their engineering officer cadet programme which will see them qualify as Engineering Officers of the Watch.
HMC cadets are fully sponsored by shipping firms; with all higher education and training fees paid by their sponsor. They will also undertake time at sea, in the work environment on board sponsoring ships as well as earning from the first day of training.
They will study across two centres, with specialist marine engineering lectures taking place at the Humber Maritime College and workshop activities taking place at the Grimsby Institute’s extensive engineering facility. Cadets will also use HMC’s state-of-the-art maritime simulators, bringing the ship’s engineering systems and equipment to life and enabling the cadets to apply theory using real maritime engineering controls.
HMC Managing Director, Hugh Callaway, said, “We are extremely pleased to be welcoming our first cohort to Humber Maritime College.
“We have spent two years developing the college with a number of marine specialists and to be able to offer merchant navy cadetships and bring maritime training back to the region is something we are very proud of.
“Cadetships are a fantastic opportunity for people looking for a rewarding career in a global industry. The cadets are now with us until April 2020 when they will start their first sea phase.”
Cadet William Stanley said: “I am looking forward to going out to sea and seeing the world. I’ve never used a simulator before and I’m excited to do so. I’m really looking forward to my course.”
Engineering is the first pathway for HMC. In future intakes, which will begin March 2020 and September 2020, HMC will offer Deck Cadetships (Navigation officers) alongside the engineering route.
